International Friendship Day
YZPS celebrated International Friendship Day (IFD) on the 8th of April 2016. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘ASEAN’. The aim of this year’s celebration was to create awareness for the pupils to understand the purpose of ASEAN in terms of its roles, importance as a regional organization and to value the relationships among the countries in ASEAN. In line with the theme, the school prepared a series of programmes to commemorate this special day.
During the assembly programme, pupils learnt about the roles and responsibilities of the ASEAN community. We also had pupils from Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam sharing with our pupils about the places of interest, food and clothing in their home countries. The programme ended off with a showcase of the song ‘Let it Go’, from the popular movie ‘Frozen’, sang in 25 different languages. Pupils were exposed to the different international languages used around the world. This allowed them to appreciate and show respect to the differences in languages.
The pupils were also engaged in fun-filled activities during their recesses. The P1 to P4 pupils had a chance to make their own Southeast Asian paper dolls while the P5 and P6 pupils wrote heart-warming notes to their friends from the Southeast Asia countries on fanciful postcards. There was also a showcase of a video recorded by three of our pupils from the ASEAN countries where they shared about fun facts in their home country.
As the pupils gained deeper insights and wider knowledge about the cultures of different countries, we hoped that they will become globalised citizens who can contribute greatly to the building of our nation Singapore!
